Background
Wayne H. Bowen, Professor and Chair of the History Department at Southeast Missouri State University, is a specialist on modern Spanish history, with three published books in the field, one forthcoming, and two on the history of the Middle East. His primary areas of research have been the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, the relations between Spain and Nazi Germany, and World War II. His newest book , "Spain and the American Civil War," will be published in October 2011 by the University of Missouri Press. Other areas of research and teaching interest include the modern Middle East, military history, and the Mediterranean. He is also working on a project comparing the declines of the Spanish and Ottoman Empires in the 18th and 19th centuries. In addition to his academic career, Bowen is a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Reserve, with deployments to Bosnia (1998) and Iraq (2004). He currently commands the 347th Adjutant General Battalion, in Carbondale, Illinois.
