LI 271--Paper Three

This  paper should compare and contrast two poems assigned in this class (You can use only one of the Frost poems on which you wrote your take home exam).  The poems may be by the same author; they may be by different authors.

The poems selected should deal with the same general topic (e. g., love, death, nature), but they do not need to have the same theme or attitude toward the topic.

The paper should compare and/or contrast the themes of the poems and discuss the main techniques used by the author to develop those themes (e. g., imagery, metaphor, symbol, sound effects, word choice--these are just a few of the techniques you might need to discuss).  You may not be able to compare and contrast styles; but if you can, do so.

The paper will be 4-8 pages in length, “typed,” double spaced, 10 or 12 characters per inch.  It must use and cite at least two different critical sources and have a Works Cited page.  A title page is not required.  You may use the text but it will not count toward satisfying the requirement of two sources.  At least one of the sources must be a "hard copy," a book or article in Kent Library.  Use the modified MLA form demonstrated on the Style Sheet which is available on the Materials page of the course web page; the Style Sheet also has basic examples for electronic sources and links to more “difficult” examples.

Check Kent Library to see if an Annotated Bibliography is available for the author or authors you are writing about.  Such a work should be invaluable to you in your research.
