LI 271--Paper Two
This paper should compare and contrast two short stories (Huck Finn cannot be used in this paper) by an author or authors assigned in this class; at least one of the stories must be on the syllabus for this class.
The stories selected should deal
with the same general topic (e. g., love, death, nature), but they do not need
to have the same theme or attitude toward the topic.
The paper should compare and/or
contrast the themes of the stories and discuss the main techniques used by the
author to develop those themes (e. g., point of view, setting, character,
symbol--these are just a few of the techniques you might need to discuss). You may not be able to compare and contrast
styles; but if you can, do so.
The paper will be 5-10 pages in
length, typed, double spaced, 10 or 12 characters per inch. It must use
and cite at least three different critical sources and have a Works Cited
page. A title page is not required. At least two of the sources must be a book or
hard copy article. Follow the modified
MLA format found in “MLA Notes and Bibliography Style Sheet” on the “Materials”
page of the LI 271 Web page.
I will check at least one of your
sources. If you use a periodical found
in Kent Library, I should have no trouble finding it. If you use sources not in Kent Library, it
would be wise to have Xerox copies of those sources.
If you quote from the stories, and you probably
should, merely make clear that you are quoting from the story. Something like, STRUGGLING WITH HIS
CONSCIENCE, HUCK CONCLUDES, “I’LL GO TO HELL.”
You do not need to cite page numbers.
Check the Kent Library catalogue to see if an Annotated Bibliography is available for the authors you are writing about. Such a work should be invaluable to you in your research. And don’t forget the MLA bibliography.
