Photo Guidelines

The Cape Rock

I.  Photos

The Cape Rock usually features 11 photos by a single photographer in each issue, and we prefer a series which develops "a sense of place."  Please submit 20-25 glossies (at least 5 x 7s).  Photos with good contrast are best; but photos with large dark areas invite ink smears and the opposite, inadequate inking.  We do not print in color but have used color prints

At least nine of the eleven must be "vertical" or “portrait” style because they are on pages facing text.  A two-photo “center piece” provides the opportunity for edged pairs on related subjects; but whether the photos are paired or not, they must both be viewed the same way: i.e. both must be “portrait” or “landscape.”  The prints "sandwiching" the center piece need not match closely with the center photos.

When a photo faces a print page, it is a "bleed off." When photos face each other, they are edged or bordered.  The latter pages (and the cover photo) will have slightly different height to width ratios than the bleed offs.

Our pages are 5 ˝ x 8 ˝, not the usual ratio, which means cropping is frequently necessary.   Cropping is much easier if the photographer leaves the editor a little leeway on one side and on the top or bottom.  If you do that, feel free to enclose photocopies of the prints indicating your preferred cropping.

Please understand that the Editor of The Cape Rock makes all final decisions on the photography.  It might, for example, be necessary to print only a portion of a submitted photo, which would be the case if it were necessary to convert a "horizontal" or “landscape” to a "vertical" or “portrait” format.

Of course, every effort will be made to reproduce the artistic decisions of the photographer.

II. Copyright

The Cape Rock buys all rights but will release rights to individual authors, artists, and/or photographers upon request, provided they give proper credit to The Cape Rock as the original publisher whenever and wherever else the work is placed.  However, in any case The Cape Rock retains the right to reprint both individual works and complete issues and to print and/or re-print singly and/or in collections or anthologies any and/or all of the works, poetic, artistic, or photographic, it has previously published. (It has done so once since its founding in 1964.)

III.  Other Information

The writer, artist, and/or photographer guarantees that the work accepted by The Cape Rock has not been previously published.

Payment for graphics or photos is $100 and ten copies on publication.  The Cape Rock retains all prints and graphics it prints, but will return all unused material to the photographer or artist.

For $2 we will send a sample copy of our magazine which may be more helpful than any set of printed guidelines.

Thank you for your interest in our magazine.  We would be happy to consider your photos.
