Welcome to the experience of a lifetime - a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland in the summer of 2008 with the world famous Golden Eagles Marching Band to perform at the world renowned Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Cell Phone Information

You can make your cell phone work in the UK, by obtaining the 'subsidy unlock code' from your service provider.  Once you get it, you can unlock your phone, remove the SIM (and store it in a safe place) card and replace it with a UK SIM card.   In order for your phone to work in the UK, it must have a GSM band of 1800 Mhz.   Check w/ your service provider.

Roaming charges in the UK from US providers are typically over $1 per minute, using a UK sim card will allow you to call the USA for as little as 4 pence per minute (about 8 cents).

UI 343 - GEMB Edinburgh Tattoo

This course will be offered through the university for Fall Semester 2008 and is 3 credits.  Students will have to write a brief pre-trip paper, keep a journal in Scotland, and write a post-trip paper to get credit.  If you are interested, take a look at the syllabus.

PRE TOUR ESSAY QUESTION
Write a brief essay (2 or 3 double spaced pages) on your expectations of living in Scotland for 5 weeks.   Include your expectations of performances at the Castle, living in dorms at the University of Edinburgh, spending time with other performers at the Tattoo, socializing in a foreign country, and spending foreign currency.   Also include if you have ever been outside of the United States prior to this trip, whether you’ve flown on an airplane before, and other pertinent items.   Be careful to explain your excitement for traveling in specific terms, as well as any fears you may harbor as you leave the United States.”

Monetary Information

The British pound and the Scottish pound are interchangeable and can be obtained quite easily through your ATM card in any local Edinburgh (or London) ATM machine.  These usually provide you with the best exchange rate which right now is about 2 for 1 (dollars to pound).  While this makes items purchased quite expensive in terms of dollars, remember that once we get to Edinburgh both your housing and meals are provided by the Tattoo.  Current exchange rates can be found by clicking here.  A currency convertor (from pounds to dollars or dollars to pounds) can be found here.

Weather Information

The weather in England and Scotland will be much cooler than in Missouri, so be sure you dress accordingly.  The temperature is reported in degrees Celsius in the British Isles, so you might want to familiarize yourself with that measurement.  Zero degrees Celsius equals 32 degrees Fahrenheit.  Current Edinburgh weather can be found here

Payment Information

The trip will cost EXACTLY $2500 US dollars.  Most of the cost will be the price for the plane flight, but students will also be asked to pay for 4 nights of accommodations in London and York.

Roundtrip airfare from Chicago/London - $1450.00
2 Nights lodging at Radisson Grafton/London - $90/night
2 nights lodging in York - $95/night
Transportation from Cape/Chicago, London/Edinburgh, Edinburgh/Glasgow, Chicago/Cape - $700/student

Total per student cost - $2500
